Encontramos en un post antiguo de Nick Milton el concepto de lección aprendida. «Una lección aprendida» es una recomendación, basada en la experiencia analizada, de la cual otros pueden aprender para mejorar su desempeño y donde se toman acciones para un cambio en el comportamiento personal u operativo como resultado de la experiencia. Pasos del proceso hacia una lección aprendida:

1. Reflexionar sobre la experiencia. Pensar (y discutir en equipo) sobre qué pasó.

2. Identificar puntos de aprendizaje. ¿Dónde había una diferencia entre lo que se planificó y lo que realmente sucedió? O una diferencia positiva o negativa.

3. Analizar. ¿Por qué hubo una diferencia? ¿Cuáles fueron las causas raíz?

4. Generalizar. ¿Cuál es el punto de aprendizaje? ¿Qué se debe hacer en la actividad futura para evitar el fracaso o repetir el éxito? En esta etapa, tenemos una lección identificada. Será una lección útil, si otros pueden aprender de ella, y para que otros puedan aprender de ella, debe ser instructiva.

5. Actuar. Una lección debe ir acompañada de una acción si debe considerarse como aprendida. Se debe cambiar un documento, un procedimiento, una política, una estructura, un presupuesto o una orden. Entonces este cambio debe ser comunicado, por lo que las prácticas de trabajo pueden modificarse como resultado. Si nada cambia, nada se ha aprendido.
