La organización troncal (backbone organisation) cumple el rol de facilitador, gerente de proyecto y gerente de datos para la iniciativa de impacto colectivo (Kania y Kramer 2011). El personal de la organización proporciona apoyo administrativo y coordinación entre todas las organizaciones participantes para garantizar que el proyecto supere los obstáculos y avance.
De esta manera, el impacto colectivo disminuye la competencia entre las iniciativas de cambio social al fomentar la colaboración en lugar del impacto aislado (Irby y Boyle 2014).
